Frequently asked questions

What equipment is needed for a home gym?

A basic set-up for pushing, pulling, leg and core exercises can consist of dumbbells or kettlebells, resistance bands and a pull-up bar, together with an adjustable weight bench and an exercise mat. For squats, bench presses and deadlifts, a barbell, weight plates and a rack with safety catches are also required. Like the pull-up bar, the rack should only be fixed to load-bearing structures. Cardio equipment can be added for endurance training, but it is not essential. Stable equipment storage and sufficient clear space for movement are also important.

Suitable gym flooring should also be considered early in the planning process. Slip-resistant gym flooring made from PU-bound rubber granules reduces noise and vibration while protecting the subfloor. Tiles around 1 cm thick are often sufficient for cardio equipment, while thicker tiles are selected for floor exercises, free-weight areas and heavy equipment.
