Frequently asked questions

Can a basement be used as a gym?

Yes, a basement can be used as a gym if the ceiling height, moisture levels, ventilation and floor construction suit the intended use. For overhead exercises, pull-ups and jumps, a ceiling height of at least 250 cm is generally advisable. The indoor climate should remain dry to avoid encouraging mould growth. In older basements without sufficient waterproofing, moisture from the ground may penetrate walls and floors. The cause of persistent dampness should be investigated and remedied before the room is fitted out. As warm summer air can condense on cool basement surfaces, ventilation should be carried out when the outside air is dry and cool, with a dehumidifier added where required.

Gym flooring should be selected according to the type of training and equipment used. Non-slip fitness flooring made from PU-bound rubber granules reduces noise and vibration while protecting the subfloor. For cardio training, tiles from around 1 cm thick are often sufficient. Thicker tiles are advisable for floor exercises, free-weight areas, and beneath racks and heavy equipment. Where weights are regularly dropped from a greater height, an appropriate floor construction should be provided.
