The total cost of a 20 m² terrace depends on the chosen surface and the work needed to prepare the ground, construct the sub-base and complete the installation. Depending on the specification, the overall cost can range from a few hundred to several thousand euros.
Concrete slabs are generally at the lower end of the price range. Ceramic tiles, timber decking and wood plastic composite decking, commonly known as WPC, tend to fall within the middle range, while natural stone is usually the most expensive option. Timber and WPC also need regular maintenance. Strong sunlight can make WPC hot and may cause it to warp. Installation requirements have a significant effect on the final cost. Tiled or poured surfaces need a firm sub-base, often including a concrete slab, and usually call for a specialist contractor. Where the surface is laid on a compacted bed of gravel or chippings, some of the work may be carried out as a DIY project.
