Frequently asked questions

Patio cost per square metre for a 20x20 patio?

A patio costs between €30 and €500 or CHF 30 and CHF 500 per square metre, depending on the material, substrate and installation. This wide range reflects the fact that the complete patio construction, rather than the surface covering alone, must be considered.

Gravel or chippings are at the lower end of the price range. For concrete paving slabs, outdoor ceramic tiles, timber, WPC and natural stone, material prices are supplemented by the costs of excavation and disposal, load-bearing and frost-protection layers, bedding or substructure, falls and drainage, edge restraints, delivery and installation.

Installation costs are not the only consideration: maintenance requirements, service life and comfort in use also matter. Timber requires regular maintenance, while WPC needs less maintenance than timber but heats up noticeably and expands in strong sunlight. Concrete paving slabs, natural stone and frost-resistant outdoor ceramic tiles are durable. Errors in construction, drainage or installation can lead to frost damage, moisture damage and damage to the system.

Where there is a risk of system damage from such errors, WARCO patio slabs made from PU-bound rubber granules are loose-laid on a level, load-bearing and well-drained substrate. WARCO patio slabs can be installed on a DIY basis. A large proportion of the total cost is attributable to the slabs, while the installation work remains limited.

With patio slab prices ranging from €40 to €120 or CHF 40 to CHF 120 per square metre, the material cost for a 20 m² patio is around €800 to €2,400 or CHF 800 to CHF 2,400. Additional costs may be incurred for substrate preparation, delivery, cutting and edge restraints.
