How to lay rubber flooring for exercise equipment?

The space needed for a home gym depends on training goals, equipment selection and the number of people intending to train at the same time.

A compact set-up with dumbbells, kettlebells, a weight bench and storage can often fit into around 10 m². With cardio equipment, up to 20 m² may be appropriate, while a rack and barbell may require up to 25 m².

Alongside the equipment, allow clear space for standing and mat exercises, as well as mobility work and stretching. Walkways should be at least 80 cm wide. Regularly used main routes can be up to 100 cm wide. Equipment with moving parts also requires the clearances specified by its manufacturer, with at least 200 cm generally required behind a treadmill.

These clearances should be planned on a level installation area so that all equipment feet rest evenly. Slip-resistant fitness flooring made from PU-bound rubber granules helps protect the substrate and reduces noise and vibration.

For cardio equipment, slabs from 1 cm thick are often sufficient. Thicker slabs are appropriate for floor exercises, free-weight areas, racks and heavy equipment. Both slab thickness and installation should follow the equipment manufacturer’s installation requirements so that the equipment stands level and stable.
