How much does it cost to renovate a balcony?

The cost of renovating a balcony varies depending on its size, structure, condition, the scope of the work, and the materials used. For simpler projects, such as just replacing the floor covering, around 40 GBP per square metre may suffice. However, more complex overhauls with full structural work and high-end materials can exceed 900 GBP per square metre.

Typical tasks involved in a balcony renovation:

    • removing the old surface

    • exposing the load-bearing structure

    • possible insulation

    • waterproofing

    • renewing or replacing the railing

    • laying a new floor covering

    • refurbishing or cladding the walls

    • disposing of the removed materials

Whether insulation is advisable depends on whether the balcony (e g a concrete slab) is thermally separated from the main building. Wooden or metal balconies added externally usually don’t require insulation, whereas a continuous concrete slab may benefit from it. The choice of flooring is also key: ceramic tiles can crack over time due to weather, wood needs substantial maintenance and can rot, and WPC can overheat and deform. A weatherproof alternative is rubber granule tiles that are simply laid without adhesive. Paired with an elastic waterproof layer (e g ALLESDICHT), it’s even possible to do the job yourself. This solution is durable, easy to clean, and safeguards against moisture and damage.

When estimating total costs, remember to factor in both the purchase and installation costs, as well as ongoing maintenance expenses, to ensure a long-lasting and cost-effective outcome.
