Can a balcony be tiled?
Yes, a balcony can be tiled. Tiles made from ceramic, natural stone, or terracotta are traditional flooring options for balconies because their robust, low-maintenance surface is considered very durable.
In practice, however, water often seeps into the grout lines shortly after installation, and the combination of summer heat and winter frost can lead to chipping and breakage. As a result, a tiled balcony typically needs to be renovated again after 5 to 10 years.
Moreover, installing stone and ceramic tiles on a balcony is quite labour-intensive. First, a level screed with a slope of at least 1.5% away from the building must be created. The tiles are then laid using an exterior-grade adhesive in the desired pattern, with tile spacers ensuring even gaps. Edge tiles and the wall trim are cut to size, and the surface is carefully grouted. The lifespan of the tiled surface depends directly on the quality of the materials and the workmanship.
A simpler alternative is to use WARCO balcony tiles. These tiles are not glued but are laid in a floating manner. Integrated interlocking elements in the tile edges form a stable, permanently connected surface that does not shift. Made of PU-bound rubber granulate, these tiles are weather-resistant, impact-absorbing, and provide sound and thermal insulation. Additionally, WARCO balcony tiles can be installed quickly by yourself without requiring special expertise.
