How is a tiled surface refurbished on a layer of gravel or chippings?
Sometimes concrete or stone tiles are laid on a balcony or flat roof over a layer of gravel. This layer serves either to protect the underlying waterproofing or as a base for the concrete tiles laid above. As the loose material shifts over time, the tiled surface becomes uneven, crooked, and misaligned.
For proper refurbishment of the tiled surface, three strategies are available:
1. New rubber granulate tiles are installed directly over the existing concrete or stone tiles. If necessary, the current covering is partially or completely renewed to create a level base.
2. The existing covering is removed and the gravel layer is stabilised by installing plastic honeycomb grids, requiring a minimum depth of 6 cm.
3. Both the covering and the entire loose filling are removed so that the new terrace tiles can be laid directly on the waterproofing, with any required leveling achieved using slip-resistant polystyrene boards.
