Pool Surround Tiles, Type XT, are precision-cut tiles that are 1.8 cm thick and have a wearing layer of through-coloured EPDM rubber granules. Only a tight joint remains between the tiles, so the pool surround looks like a poured surface. Splash water and rain pass through the tiles. At the pool edge, the flooring is comfortable under bare feet, resilient, slip-resistant and colour-stable.
How does the pool surround feel underfoot?
People are usually barefoot around a pool. The flooring feels warm underfoot and pleasantly resilient. You may sit at the edge after swimming, lie on a towel in the sun or play with children beside the pool. The grippy surface is slip-resistant. If someone trips, the resilient flooring cushions the fall. This provides comfort and safety for children, older people and pets. In strong sunshine, the flooring warms up like any other floor covering. Light and mottled colours warm up less than dark shades.
What are the pool surround tiles made from?
The tiles have two layers with different functions. The upper wearing layer comes into contact with hands and feet. It is made from newly manufactured EPDM rubber granules that are coloured throughout. The colour therefore remains even as the surface wears over time. The wearing layer also withstands chlorinated splash water from the pool that lands on the surround. The base layer is made from ELT granules, which are recycled rubber granules from end-of-life tyres. It carries the weight and cushions impacts. Sun loungers and garden furniture therefore leave no permanent indentations in normal use. The flooring weighs around 14.5 kg per square metre. When first unpacked, the tiles may still smell of rubber. Outdoors, this smell soon disappears.
Can I lay the pool surround myself?
Yes, you do not need a contractor. The tiles are loose laid and simply placed in position. There is no need to drill, glue or use screws. Concrete, paving, old tiles and timber decking are generally suitable substrates. The substrate must be able to bear the load over time and must be stable and reasonably level. On grass or soil, gravel grids filled with stone chippings form the base beneath the tiles. The optimised jigsaw interlock connects each tile to the neighbouring tiles. This prevents the edges from lifting. At the pool edge, the tiles are cut with a jigsaw or circular saw. Around a round pool, they are cut along the curve. The smaller format needs fewer cuts on curves and in narrow strips. Different formats cannot interlock, so one format is laid in each area.
How does the pool surround cope with splash water, rain and frost?
Splash water and rain pass through the tiles. On an impermeable substrate, the water runs through shallow drainage channels on the underside, following the gradient. On gravel grids filled with stone chippings, it drains into the ground. This prevents puddles from forming at the pool edge and allows the flooring to dry quickly. Frost does not damage the tiles, so they can remain in place through winter. A broom and garden hose are enough for cleaning.
Can I order the pool surround cut to size?
Yes, for an extra charge. Draw the area in the laying planner on the WARCO website and send the DXF file to WARCO. WARCO then supplies the tiles cut and ready to lay, including the pieces for the curve around a round pool. On site, you only need to lay them out in the correct order. On a firm substrate, the flooring does not need a separate base. To increase the build-up height, place suitable Type XX functional tiles underneath. They also reduce impact sound.
