Bumper Plate is pressed from fine rubber granules bonded with polyurethane and has a steel ring in its bore. When dropped from head height, it absorbs most of the impact energy, rebounds in a controlled way and then comes to rest. All weights have the same diameter. The barbell therefore always sits at the same starting height and lands evenly across all the loaded plates when dropped.
What training is the Bumper Plate suitable for?
Bumper Plate is designed for exercises where a barbell is lowered or dropped from a height. These include the snatch and the clean and jerk in weightlifting, cleans and thrusters in CrossFit, and deadlifts and squats. The plate fits Olympic barbells with 50-mm sleeves. It can be used in a gym, a CrossFit box or a home gym. Its UV-stabilised granules also make it suitable for outdoor training.
How does the Bumper Plate absorb impact?
Bumper Plate absorbs impact through its elastic rubber body. The rubber yields slightly when it hits the ground and slows the barbell down. Part of the energy is converted into heat. The rest produces the controlled rebound. An iron weight plate transfers the impact to the floor and the building structure with almost no damping. The Bumper Plate significantly reduces the peak impact force and makes dropping the barbell noticeably quieter.
Why do all weights have the same diameter?
Bumper Plate has the same outside diameter in every weight class. Only its width increases as the weight increases. The barbell therefore always sits at the same starting height, regardless of which plates are loaded. When dropped, the barbell lands evenly and the impact is spread across all the loaded plates. This helps protect the plates, the barbell and the floor.
What is the Bumper Plate made from?
Bumper Plate is made from fine recycled tyre rubber granules (ELT), produced from end-of-life tyres and bonded with polyurethane. The plate is pressed in a mould under high pressure. The rubber body has a consistent structure and absorbs impact evenly throughout its cross-section. A steel ring sits in the bore. It keeps the plate correctly seated on the sleeve and protects the bore from wear. The finely textured, closed surface is highly abrasion-resistant. The material complies with the limits for harmful substances that apply in the EU. New plates may initially have a rubber smell. The smell fades after a short time.
What flooring should be used under the Bumper Plate?
Bumper Plate helps protect the floor, but a suitable flooring system is still needed where heavy barbells are dropped regularly. This can be a training floor with Base Layer Class 1 panels beneath it. This type of floor absorbs more of the impact and reduces the load on the screed and the floor structure.
