Sports Court Tile Type XT is a precision-cut tile, 2.8 cm thick, with a wearing layer of through-coloured EPDM rubber granules. The wearing layer retains its colour as the surface wears. Once laid, only tight joints remain between the tiles. This makes the court look like a poured surface. The base layer of fine granules gives the ball an even rebound. The surface is grippy, slip-resistant and weather-resistant.
What is the surface like to play on?
Whether it is basketball in the garden, streetball in the school playground or football on a small-sided pitch, the ball bounces evenly and predictably. Shoes grip well when stopping and turning. Dribbling is noticeably quieter than on concrete or asphalt. Neighbours benefit from that too.
How can the court be designed?
The court can be rectangular and use one or more colours. Curves and circles are also possible. This allows zones in a second colour to be added, such as the area beneath the basket or the centre circle. For an additional charge, WARCO cuts the tiles precisely to size at the factory so they are ready to lay. WARCO needs a drawing of the area as a DXF file for this. For areas with straight edges, the drawing is easy to create with the laying planner in the WARCO shop.
How are the tiles constructed?
The tiles have two layers with different purposes. The upper wearing layer is made from new, fully through-coloured EPDM rubber granules. This means the tiles retain their colour as the surface wears over time. Underneath is the base layer of fine recycled tyre rubber granules (ELT), obtained from end-of-life tyres. It is made to give the ball a good, even rebound. The tiles weigh around 24.5 kg per square metre. When first unpacked, they can sometimes smell of rubber. Outdoors, the smell soon fades.
How is the court laid and maintained?
The tiles are loose laid, with no adhesive or screws. The substrate must be stable, largely level and able to bear the load over the long term. No additional construction is needed beneath the tiles on concrete or asphalt. On natural ground, a sub-base is needed, such as gravel grids filled with stone chippings. The optimised jigsaw interlock joins the tiles together. This prevents the edges from lifting. Rain passes through the tiles and, on concrete or asphalt, flows away underneath them along the gradient. Frost does not damage the tiles. Leaves and sand can be removed with a broom or garden hose. If a heavily used area wears down, such as beneath the basket, individual tiles can be replaced there.
