Can rubber flooring be installed on a roof covering?

Rubber flooring alone does not make a double standing seam roof walkable as a terrace. A structural engineer and a competent contractor must first confirm that the roof structure and standing seam covering can carry the weight of the covering and the loads arising from use. Roof pitch, drainage, wind-uplift restraint and fall protection must also be considered.

Once suitability has been confirmed, elastic WARCO patio slabs made from PU-bound rubber granules can be installed as the wearing layer. The slabs are loose-laid on the intact metal roof covering and are neither screwed nor bonded to it. The metal roof covering remains the water-shedding layer: rainfall passes through the open-pored slabs and then drains away along the roof pitch.

The double standing seams project approximately 2.5 to 3 cm above the metal surface. Grooves are machined into the underside of the slabs to correspond with the position of the standing seams, allowing the seams to fit into them while the slabs rest on the metal between the seams. Slab thickness must exceed the seam height by at least 1 cm. 4 cm slabs are used for this purpose. The grooves must not weaken the slabs impermissibly or restrict thermal movement of the metal roof covering.

Measures against movement and wind uplift must be designed for the individual roof. Any damage to the metal, seams or junctions must be repaired by a competent contractor before installation.
