How are rubber tiles laid on steel grating?
Pedestrian steel grating on balconies, walkways, stairs, bridges and platforms can be covered directly with rubber tiles made from PU-bound rubber granulate. No substructure is required. The tiles cover the open grid surface and reduce much of the rattling and clanging normally associated with the grating.
The required tile thickness depends on the mesh size and the load on the area. The wider the spacing between the bearing bars, the thicker the tile needs to be to prevent it from being pressed into the openings underfoot. With a fine mesh of 30 x 10 mm, the usual tile thickness is sufficient. The underside should not be heavily profiled, as the tile needs full contact with the bearing bars. All patio slabs in the manufacturer’s current range meet this requirement. Water-permeable tiles do not alter drainage. Rainwater continues to pass through the covering and then through the grating as before.
Depending on the installation, the tiles may be laid loose, clamped in place or bonded with PU adhesive. They can be clamped using perforated sheet or screws fitted with large washers that hold down the tile edges. Fixing through the tile itself is not possible. On steel grating stairs, each tile is cut to the size of the tread.
