Can paving slabs be laid directly on grass?
Rubber paving slabs can be set into a lawn as individual stepping stones. The turf is cut out to match the slab, the ground beneath is levelled and firmed, then the slab is set in place. This provides a firm walking surface, and the slab can be lifted whenever necessary.
A continuous garden path requires a sub-base. Without it, the natural ground beneath resilient rubber paving slabs may shift over time, causing individual slabs to settle and the path to become uneven.
The topsoil is removed and a firm formation level is prepared. Plastic honeycomb grids, sold as gravel grids, gravel stabilisation grids or grass grids, are laid on top, and their cells are filled to the top with angular crushed grit. The slabs are then placed over them to form an even, water-permeable garden path.
