What is the expected lifespan of rubber tiles and rubber mats?
Rubber tiles and rubber mats made from PU-bound rubber granules have a typical service life of ten to fifteen years. This figure is a guide drawn from practical experience, not a fixed lifespan. Some installed surfaces have remained in use for more than twenty years, whereas others have needed replacement after only a few years.
The intensity of use is the main factor determining service life. Mechanical abrasion at the surface is the most important cause of ageing. In private settings, levels of wear are usually considerably lower than at commercially operated facilities. The location and conditions at the site also have an effect, particularly exposure to sunlight and frequent freeze-thaw cycles. The type of granules matters as well. An EPDM wear layer is colour-stable and UV-resistant, while the colour of a covering made from ELT rubber granules with a pigmented binder may change over the years.
A technical data sheet is provided for each WARCO product and includes assessments of UV resistance, colourfastness and abrasion resistance. These ratings help match the floor covering to its intended application. Installation is another factor. Laying the covering in accordance with the installation guidelines on a level, structurally sound substrate can help extend its service life.
