    Which patio surface lasts the longest?

    Natural stone and concrete slabs have the longest stated service lives. For a patio, however, headline figures say little about how long a surface remains usable and presentable without major refurbishment. That period is usually shorter because the laid covering itself is seldom the first component to reach the end of its service life. Weathering, wear and age-related deterioration are more commonly the limiting factors. Joints, the connection to the base and the exposed surface tend to be affected first.

     

    As a practical guide, the following figures indicate how long each patio surface is likely to remain presentable before major refurbishment is required.

    - Natural stone on an unbound grit laying course: 25 to 40 years, limited by settlement in the laying course and sub-base.

    - Concrete slabs: 20 to 30 years, limited by settlement, loss of jointing compound and edge damage.

    - Porcelain tiles laid on a full mortar bed: 10 to 25 years, limited by moisture trapped in voids beneath the tiles and freeze-thaw action.

    - Tropical hardwood decking: 10 to 20 years, limited by splitting, increasing brittleness and moisture around the supports.

    - Patio tiles made from PU-bound rubber granules: 10 to 20 years, limited by surface wear.

    - WPC composite decking: 8 to 15 years, limited by distortion, embrittlement and damage to the supporting structure.

    - Softwood decking: 8 to 15 years, limited by moisture damage around the supports and at the end grain.

    - Resin-bound aggregate surfacing: 8 to 12 years, limited by cracking transferred from the substrate and binder degradation.

     

    The work required for renewal matters as much as the number of years. Where tiles or slabs are fixed to a mortar bed, refurbishment often requires a substantial area to be removed, and local repairs can remain noticeable. Timber and WPC may show marked visual deterioration before the boards cease to perform structurally.

     

    Patio tiles made from PU-bound rubber granules are loose-laid, need no mortar joints and are frost-resistant. If localised damage occurs, individual tiles can be replaced. The tiles can also be taken up and relaid in another location.
