Do new rubber mats smell of rubber?
Yes. New rubber mats and rubber tiles made from rubber granules bound with polyurethane have a characteristic odour. It comes from the fresh rubber granules, just as beech timber smells of wood and leather upholstery smells of leather. The odour is usually most noticeable in the first few days after delivery. It begins to lessen gradually after manufacture, much like the new-car smell.
The rate at which the characteristic odour disperses depends mainly on air exchange and temperature. Outdoors, it generally becomes much less noticeable after a short period. On balconies and terraces, it often recedes into the background quite quickly. In enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, such as a glazed conservatory, it can seem stronger at first because there is little air movement. Warm conditions may intensify the odour temporarily, but can also speed its dispersal.
To shorten the initial phase, rubber tiles can be left to air outdoors for a few days before installation, preferably in the sun. After installation indoors, regular ventilation helps during the first few weeks.
Sensitivity to odour varies from person to person. During the initial phase, some people may therefore find it bothersome. When used as intended, the products are harmless to health.
