Are rubber tiles and rubber mats harmful to health?
When used as intended, WARCO rubber tiles and rubber mats are not harmful to health. They are made from rubber granules bound with a solvent-free polyurethane binder. The binder reacts completely during manufacture and is fully cured in the finished tile or mat.
The rubber granules are produced mainly from recycled end-of-life tyres. Levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can vary by source and batch. In two-layer versions, the wear layer is made from newly manufactured EPDM rubber granules coloured as part of the mix. This EPDM contains no tyre-derived granules and is therefore not subject to the same variation.
For applications involving prolonged or intensive skin contact, versions with an EPDM wear layer are therefore preferable. The two-layer construction is stated in the relevant product description.
