The WARCO interlocking playground safety tile provides certified protection wherever slips and minor falls need to be cushioned – on playgrounds, in nurseries and schools, on terrace play areas, and in community spaces. With certified protection for fall heights of up to 100 cm in accordance with EN 1177 (at a thickness of 4 cm), it is ideal for circulation and play areas that do not feature high climbing frames or raised platforms. Material & structure:

The tiles are manufactured from PU-bonded rubber granulate and feature a resilient, slip-resistant surface. Available in 3 or 4 cm thicknesses, they provide dependable shock absorption with a low build-up height. Precision-cut interlocking puzzle edges ensure a secure, form-fitting connection, while a slight edge bevel creates a calm, tidy joint appearance.

Connection & installation

The tiles are laid floating and joined via the interlocking puzzle edges. This produces a dimensionally stable, form-fitting surface with aligned joints (stack bond/cross joints) suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The handy 50 × 50 cm format makes installation simple and requires no specialist tools.

Properties & safety

The tiles are slip-resistant in wet and dry conditions, water-permeable and resilient. Rainwater can either infiltrate the subgrade or drain through the integrated drainage channels on a bound base layer beneath the tiles. This prevents puddles or dust patches from forming, ensuring the surface remains usable all year round. Outdoors, unbound sub-bases (e.g. plastic honeycomb grids or gravel grids) help to prevent soil sealing.

Maintenance & economy

Maintenance is straightforward: rainfall rinses away light soiling, while heavier dirt can be swept or blown off. Cleaning with a mop, a pressure washer or professional floor-cleaning equipment is also possible. Individual tiles can be replaced if required. How do I calculate the number of tiles needed for my area?

You can work out how many WARCO tiles you need in two ways: calculate the quantity manually or use the online laying planner.

Measure the length and width of the area in cm. Divide each measurement by the corresponding usable size of a tile, then round each result up to the next whole number. Multiply the two rounded figures to obtain the minimum quantity required. For irregularly shaped areas, it is advisable to make a scale drawing on graph paper.

How should safety tiles be installed correctly?

Safety tiles are installed on a sound, level base. On bound sub-bases such as concrete or asphalt, the tiles are laid directly on the surface. For outdoor installations, a fall of 1 to 2% must be provided for drainage. Loose sand, stone chippings or gravel cannot be laid as a stable layer and will shift over time beneath the tiles. For lasting stability, a gravel grid, also called a grass grid, is used. The gravel grid is filled to its top edge with stone chippings.

The starting point is chosen according to the site conditions and the type of tile. Installation often begins at the centre of the area, sometimes at the centre of one side and sometimes in a corner. Tiles with a jigsaw interlock are pressed down from above into the interlock of the adjoining tiles. Tiles with plastic connectors are laid row by row in half bond. A rubber mallet is used for fitting, and cutting is best done with a circular saw. Installation is carried out at no more than about 17 °C and away from direct sunlight, as heat causes the tiles to expand.

When the tiled area forms a section within an existing hard surface, such as a play area on a school playground, an edge ramp is used to form a flush transition to the main surface. Edge ramps are bonded to the underlying surface with PU adhesive. Edging is generally not required for tiles with a jigsaw interlock. For tiles with plastic connectors, edging is required on every side, such as a rubber kerb.

How do visible jigsaw interlocks, plastic connectors and concealed jigsaw interlocks differ?

Rubber tiles made from polyurethane bound rubber granulate can be joined by one of three systems, a visible jigsaw interlock, plastic connectors or a concealed jigsaw interlock. The systems differ in the profile formed at the tile edge, the joint pattern, the laying patterns that can be used and whether the completed area needs perimeter edging.

With a visible jigsaw interlock, the tile edge has interlocking teeth. Depending on the product range, the teeth have a dovetail form or a rounded shape, and they engage with the adjoining tile through the full depth of the tile. The interlocking profile is either formed as the tile is pressed or, after the pressed tiles have rested at the factory for several days, cut from the tile. How prominent the tooth pattern looks depends on the edge profile and on the colour of the tiles. If the same tooth pattern is present on all four sides, the tiles can be laid in any direction. If the sides differ, the edge profiles impose a fixed laying direction. The visible jigsaw interlock provides the most stable connection and holds the tiled area together without perimeter edging or adhesive.

Tiles joined with plastic connectors have straight edges. Cylindrical plastic connectors are inserted into factory drilled holes in the sides of the tiles. Installation proceeds row by row in half bond. In this pattern, every tile is connected to four other tiles, two in the preceding row and two in the following row. Tiles next to one another within the same row remain unconnected. Each connector restricts movement across its own axis, while the tiles remain able to move along that axis. The tiled area therefore needs adhesive or fixed perimeter edging that provides restraint in the direction of the connector axes. Often a suitable boundary already exists, such as a parapet or wall. An adjoining lawn that finishes level with the tiled area can also hold the outer tiles at the side.

With a concealed jigsaw interlock, the tiles engage below the visible part of the edge, within a stepped recess on the underside of each tile. Two sides of the tile carry the projecting profile, while the two opposite sides carry the matching counterpart. This arrangement fixes the laying direction. Viewed from above, the interlock remains concealed and the joints run in straight lines. Rubber tiles with this connection can be laid in stack bond, which forms a chequerboard pattern, or in a 1/3 offset. Because the interlocking profiles sit within the stepped recess, the joint does not extend down to the sub-base, which therefore remains fully covered across the whole tiled area.

What are safety mats and safety tiles made of?

Safety mats and safety tiles are made primarily from ELT rubber granules. ELT stands for End-of-Life Tyres. These tyres are shredded and processed into rubber granules. ELT consists mainly of SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) and NR (Natural Rubber).

The rubber granules are bonded under pressure using a clear or coloured binder, usually polyurethane (PU).

Depending on the product version, the wear layer of a safety tile or safety mat is made from EPDM rubber granules. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer rubber) is a modern synthetic rubber with excellent UV resistance and is usually coloured throughout.

How thick should playground safety mats and playground safety tiles be?

The required thickness depends on the free fall height of the playground equipment. The greater the possible fall height, the thicker the tile needs to be. However, the critical fall height cannot be determined from the thickness alone, as the construction, density and elasticity of the tile also affect impact attenuation.

As a general guide:

up to 100 cm free fall height: 3 cm

up to 150 cm free fall height: 5 cm

up to 200 cm free fall height: 8 cm

up to 300 cm free fall height: 10 cm

The decisive value is always the critical fall height stated in the test report for the specific product in accordance with BS EN 1177, not the thickness alone.
