Liquid rubber waterproofing for roof areas can use liquid-applied waterproofing or an EPDM membrane; the choice depends on water load, the substrate, and the shape and configuration of the area. Both methods have proved suitable for refurbishing balconies, terraces, roof areas and basements.

EPDM membranes are large-format sheets of synthetic rubber that are cut to size. Depending on the build-up, they may be loose-laid with ballast, mechanically fixed or bonded. A single cut piece can cover extensive areas without seams; at connections and penetrations, the system may require carefully executed bonding or preformed components.

For small and medium-sized areas with numerous detailed connections, liquid-applied waterproofing is usually the more practical choice. For large, lightly configured roof areas, an EPDM roof membrane is usually more practical. Both methods require a load-bearing, clean substrate, and sufficient fall assists the drainage of surface water.
