Frequently asked questions

How can I waterproof a surface?

When renovating balconies, terraces, roofs or basements, the right waterproofing method depends mainly on the level of water exposure, the substrate and the shape of the surface. In practice, two methods have proved effective.

    Liquid-applied waterproofing (e.g. ALLESDICHT)

The ready-to-use waterproofing compound is applied directly to the prepared, sound substrate in several coats. Once cured, it forms a seamless, crack-bridging rubber membrane that also creates continuous waterproof transitions around junctions, corners and penetrations. This is where its main advantage lies, as no seams or preformed components are required. It is therefore particularly suitable for irregular surfaces and areas with many details.

    EPDM roofing membranes

These large-format waterproofing membranes are cut to size, laid in place and secured, depending on the construction, either with ballast, mechanical fixings or adhesive. On large, even roof areas with few penetrations, they are an economical option because extensive sections can often be covered with a single sheet and without seams. At junctions and penetrations, however, carefully executed bonded joints or preformed components are required.

    Which method should you choose?

For small and medium-sized areas, or where there are many junctions and details, liquid-applied waterproofing is usually the more practical choice. For large roof areas with few details, EPDM roofing membranes may offer advantages. In every case, the substrate must be sound and clean, and adequate falls must be provided to ensure proper drainage.
