The 50 × 50 × 4 cm playground safety tile is an impact-absorbing rubber tile designed for critical fall heights up to 125 cm. Certified to BS EN 1177, it suits play areas with medium-height equipment. The manageable format and side-inserted plastic connector pins support straightforward installation and help maintain a stable, long-lasting surface. Individual tiles can be lifted and replaced if required.
Applications
This 4 cm playground safety tile is used wherever falls from up to 125 cm need to be mitigated. Typical settings include slides, spring riders, balance trails and low climbing frames in nurseries, schools and public or private play areas. The resilient, slip-resistant surface is also specified in therapy, rehabilitation and care environments where a forgiving, stable footing is required.
Structure and composition
The tile is manufactured from PU-bonded ELT rubber granulate. ELT stands for End of Life Tyres, referring to granulate derived from recycled vehicle tyres. An increased binder content enhances wear resistance and supports reliable outdoor performance. On coloured variants, the binder in the wearing layer is pigmented and coats the granulate particles. A chamfered edge supports a neat, consistent joint line across the installation.
Underside and installation
Tiles are laid in a staggered pattern on a bound sub-base or on a plastic gravel grid system. Two sides of each tile incorporate pre-formed holes for plastic connector pins, linking each tile to adjacent rows and helping to prevent lateral movement. An edge restraint further stabilises the area; if the pins are bonded during installation, it may not always be required. The underside features circular conical feet, allowing water to drain beneath the tile; on plastic gravel grids, rainwater passes directly into the sub-base.
Maintenance and use
PU-bonded rubber safety tiles are slip-resistant, water-permeable and elastic underfoot. The surface is low-maintenance and straightforward to clean: debris can be swept away or removed with a pressure washer. If sections become worn or damaged over time, individual tiles can be exchanged without disturbing the surrounding area.
