Stable Mat Comfort is a 4 cm thick stable mat made from rubber granules bonded with polyurethane. It is intended for indoor and outdoor stables.
What does a horse need in its stable?
A horse can only get the REM sleep it needs for recovery while lying down. Horses mainly lie down on dry, yielding surfaces. They spend much less time lying down on wet or cold floors. Bare concrete is cold. The mat has a high profile on its underside. The air space within this profile provides a barrier against the cold concrete. When the horse lies down, the mat cushions its weight. It remains firm under the hoof. As grassland animals, horses need firm ground underfoot. The granular surface is slip-resistant even when wet. This helps the horse get up.
What is Stable Mat Comfort made from?
Stable Mat Comfort is made from recycled tyre rubber granules (ELT). Polyurethane bonds the granules together. The mat is compacted under high pressure and is highly abrasion-resistant. The underside profile consists of many hollow feet connected by ribs. New mats initially smell of rubber, but the smell soon fades.
How are the stable mats laid?
The mats are laid without adhesive in a random bond pattern. The offcut from the last mat in one row is used as the first mat in the next row. This saves material and creates the desired T-joints. The base must be load-bearing and largely level, such as concrete or screed. The stable walls provide the edge restraint. The mats can be cut with a jigsaw or circular saw.
What happens to urine?
Very little urine passes through the mat. If it is not absorbed, it remains on the surface. If more urine keeps being deposited, it seeps beneath the mats and is broken down there. This produces ammonia, which irritates the respiratory tract. This must be prevented. One option is for the horse to urinate outside the stable. This requires constant access to an open paddock. Alternatively, enough bedding must absorb the urine, either on the mats or in a specially bedded corner where the horse urinates.
How much bedding is needed on stable mats?
The lying area remains bedded. The mat does not replace bedding, but it allows a thinner layer of straw or shavings than is needed on bare concrete. When mucking out, remove droppings and wet patches. For a thorough clean, lift individual mats and clean them with a pressure washer.
