What should I do before fitting rubber flooring indoors?
New rubber floor tiles made from PU-bound rubber granulate may have residues of release agents from manufacturing and fine rubber dust on their surface. Before fitting them indoors, such as in a gym, basement or hobby room, it is best to wash the tiles outdoors and allow them to dry completely. Warm water is more effective than cold water. A neutral cleaner suitable for rubber, used with a stiff brush or pressure washer, makes the task easier. If the tiles cannot be washed beforehand, the residues can be removed after installation by damp mopping several times with warm water.
New tiles initially have a characteristic rubber smell. This comes from the fresh rubber granulate and dissipates over time. Airing the tiles outdoors for a few days before fitting and ventilating the room regularly during the first weeks after installation help it dissipate more quickly. When used as intended, the products are not harmful to health.
The subfloor must be level, sound, clean and dry. The installation instructions relating to the product, subfloor and installation system must also be followed.
