Can you barbecue on rubber granule tiles on a patio?

A gas or charcoal barbecue can generally be used on rubber granule tiles in private settings. A small piece of hot charcoal that falls accidentally will not normally start a fire.

The tiles are made from PU-bound rubber granules and are available with fire classifications of Efl, meaning normally flammable, or Cfl-s1, meaning flame-retardant. Products made from rubber granules sourced from recycled car tyres are generally classified as normally flammable.

Products made from EPDM, including those with an EPDM surface, are generally flame-retardant. The relevant fire classification is given in the product description for each WARCO rubber tile in the shop. An open fire basket should not be placed on the tiles.

If a barbecue overturns, its embers should not be allowed to burn unchecked, as the rubber granule surfacing could then catch fire. The same care is needed as when barbecuing on a timber deck, and a bucket of water should always be kept ready in case of an emergency.
