Base Layer CL 2 is an elastic underlay made from PU-bound rubber granules, designed for multi-layer floor constructions where a balanced combination of resilience and load-bearing capacity is required. It is installed beneath a top layer tile and can be used both indoors and outdoors, for example in areas with regular movement, equipment use or changing loads. The open structure allows water to pass through and supports floating installation on a level, load-bearing sub-base.
Versatile performance
Class 2 represents the balanced variant within the damping range. The medium material density provides a combination of cushioning underfoot and sufficient resistance to point loads. This results in controlled deformation under load, reduced impact transmission and stable support for users and equipment. It is suited to applications where both walking comfort and structural stability are relevant.
Build-up height
The overall build-up height is defined by the selected top layer tile and the number of base layers. A single layer keeps the system relatively low, while additional layers increase the elastic response. Thicknesses are specified in cm and can be adapted to suit installation conditions, edge details and performance requirements.
Combination of classes
Base layers from different damping classes can be combined within one system. Firmer layers can be used in zones subject to higher loads, while Class 2 provides a balanced response in general use areas. This approach allows targeted adjustment of performance without altering the visible surface.
Staggered installation
In multi-layer constructions, the tiles are laid with staggered joints. The joints of one layer do not align with those of the next, which helps distribute loads more evenly and improves the stability of the system. Installation is carried out as a floating system without permanent fixing to the subfloor.
Advantages of sandwich construction
In a sandwich construction, the top layer tile and the base layers work together. The top layer defines the surface properties and use, while the base layers provide the elastic behaviour. This makes it possible to combine the same surface with different system characteristics. The construction can be adjusted later by adding or removing layers.
System thicknesses
The following configurations illustrate typical combinations of top layer tile and UL:
1.8 – top layer tile 1.8
2.7 – top layer tile 2.7
3.6 – top layer tile 1.8 + UL 1.8
4.5 – top layer tile 2.7 + UL 1.8
5.4 – top layer tile 2.7 + UL 2.7
6.3 – top layer tile 1.8 + UL 2.7 + UL 1.8
7.2 – top layer tile 1.8 + UL 2.7 + UL 2.7
8.1 – top layer tile 2.7 + UL 2.7 + UL 2.7
9.0 – top layer tile 1.8 + UL 2.7 + UL 2.7 + UL 1.8
9.9 – top layer tile 1.8 + UL 2.7 + UL 2.7 + UL 2.7
10.8 – top layer tile 2.7 + UL 2.7 + UL 2.7 + UL 2.7
Base Layer CL 2 is not intended as a visible surface but as a functional layer within a system. When correctly specified, it supports an elastic, water-permeable and structurally stable floor build-up for a wide range of applications.
