A safety grass grid mat combines impact attenuation with the appearance of a planted grass surface. The open grid is filled with soil or growing substrate so that grass can establish through the mat itself. The result is a permeable surface suitable for playgrounds, recreation areas and outdoor spaces where reinforced turf is preferred over sealed paving. Compared with unreinforced grassed ground, the reinforced surface is less susceptible to rutting, bare patches and muddy wear zones.
Applications
The mats are used on playgrounds, play meadows, event spaces and other outdoor areas with regular foot traffic. They are also suitable for light slopes and embankments where additional ground reinforcement helps stabilise the planted surface.
Structure and composition
The mats are manufactured from PU-bound rubber granules with an open grid pattern. After laying, the cavities are largely filled with soil or suitable substrate before seeding or turfing. Grass roots develop through the openings while the elastic rubber structure remains beneath the vegetation. This maintains a natural-looking planted area, improving walking comfort and reducing impact forces.
Installation
The mats are laid loose on a levelled base of soil, sand or suitable substrate. Once positioned, the grid is filled and seeded or covered with turf. Adjacent mats can be linked with standard cable ties where needed. Laying in a staggered pattern improves stability across larger areas.
Surface behaviour and drainage
The safety grass grid mat has been tested for critical fall heights up to 300 cm in accordance with BS EN 1177-1. Rainwater drains through the open structure directly into the ground below, so water does not remain on the surface after rainfall. The planted grid reinforces the root zone while preserving the appearance of a grassed area. The elastic structure also cushions footfall and creates a more comfortable surface than compacted soil.
Maintenance and long-term use
Once established, the area can be maintained like a conventional lawn with routine mowing. If localised damage occurs, individual mats can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the surrounding area. The loose-lay system suits outdoor sites where a planted finish and reinforced ground surface are both required.
