    Renovation of your
    terrace and balcony

    During the renovation or redesigning of terrace and balcony, the base course, i.e. the subfloor does not have to be constructed in most cases. In some cases, it might be useful to thermally insulate the existing surface or to apply a new covering. EPDM roof membranes have proved to be both durable and economical solution in renovation and renovation. WARCO tiles may be laid directly on the on top of such membrane.

Installation on a bound subfloor

    The elastic terrace tiles by WARCO may be installed easily and economically on a roof terrace or a balcony, so on the permanent load-bearing and bound subfloor. 'Classic Granite' may be easily matched with other numerous colour designs from the wide selection of WARCO palette.

What makes a bound subfloor?

By a bound subfloor we mean every kind of a base course which does not consist of loose-fill, unbound material. Typical examples of a bound subfloor are:

  • concrete and screed,
  • asphalt,
  • paving or interlocking paving,
  • ceramic tiles, slabs, stoneware,
  • natural stone tiles, sandstone, marble and granite,
  • metal sheets, chequered metal plates, roof plates with standing seam,
  • metal grids with an appropriate mesh,
  • wood planks, boards, material panels,
  • plastic or rubber (possibly with a separating layer).

All WARCO tiles, including the balcony flooring, terrace and safety tiles are water-permeable on their entire surface. A system of drainage channels is integrated into the underside of each tile. Water seeps through the tiles onto the base course, therefore, it fulfils the function of a water-conducting layer through which the water passes (in case of a grid) or, following the incline, flows away.

    Terrace tiles made of rubber granules are water-permeable. When installed on a bound, not water permeable base course, so for example, concrete, asphalt or a surface sealed with roofing membrane, good water outflow under the plates is particularly important. Therefore, the 30- and 40- mm thick WARCO terrace tiles do not only have water drainage-channel system pervading the tile's structure, but additionally, they are equipped with cup-shaped indentations that prevent water from accumulating in the tiles. This is a particular advantage especially in winter, when the transition between freezing and thawing takes place.

Drainage and water outflow

In case of an impermeable subfloor (concrete, asphalt, tiles, etc.), before laying WARCO tiles we must make sure that the water may flow away quickly and uninhibitedly. Puddles that are ≥ 3 mm deep must not remain permanently on the surface. Granulate tiles should not stay in water on regular basis, as frosty weather that might occur and the following expansion of freezing water (about 9%) could result in the expansion of the tiles lying in the water. Thawing process would bring the tiles back to their previous size, however, re-installation might be necessary here.

In order to check whether puddles will remain on the assembled surface, it is enough to empty a bucket of water or more on it; then we will see if and how the water runs out. Irregularities in the surface can be compensated by appropriate measures. With a levelling bar, the result of the work can be checked immediately.
